Germany Scraps Visa Appeal System: What This Means for Nigerians

For years, many Nigerians who faced a German visa refusal had one extra step available: the remonstration process (a kind of appeal where you could challenge the decision without reapplying).

As of July 2025, Germany has officially abolished the remonstration system. This is a significant policy change that directly affects Nigerians and other African applicants.

 What Was the Remonstration System?

The remonstration process allowed applicants whose visas were refused to write to the German Embassy and argue why their application should be reconsidered.

  • It was cheaper and faster than reapplying.
  • Many Nigerians used it as a second chance without having to pay new visa fees.

 What Has Changed?

Effective 1 July 2025, the German Federal Foreign Office abolished the remonstration procedure worldwide.

  • This decision followed pilot tests in various visa sections, as of June, which showed that removing remonstration freed capacity and reduced wait times.
  • After July 1, visa rejections will no longer be reconsidered internally via remonstration. Instead, the only recourse will be judicial review (going to court) or submitting a new visa application.
  • The legal right to judicial review remains unaffected. You can still challenge a visa refusal in court.

Why This Matters for Nigerians

  1. Loss of a low-cost appeal route
The remonstration process was free, quicker, and less formal than court action. Its removal means rejections will have a greater impact.
  2. Court appeals are expensive & slow
Legal proceedings in Germany can take months or years and often require the assistance of a lawyer.
  3. More pressure to get the first application right
With no fallback appeal, applicants must ensure all documents, justifications, and evidence are flawless from the start.
  4. You can still reapply
If your application is refused, you can submit a new application with improved supporting documents immediately.
